What Timeline to Expect in Alcohol Recovery Stages?

Mar 25, 2022 | General TRC Information

The recovery time for alcohol addiction differs from person to person. There is no specific time period which assures you complete recovery. There are several factors which affect this time frame and the process usually begins when a person decides to go for the treatment. There are different stages for the detox program which requires some dedicated amount of time.

Detox

Detox is the process where you immediately stop the consumption of alcohol so that your body becomes free of the substance. Once even the smallest trace of alcohol is removed, your body begins to react in several ways showing the absence of substance. These reactions are called withdrawal symptoms. Some of the symptoms experienced will be:

  • Digestive problems (vomiting)
  • Headaches
  • Anxiety and mood swings
  • Confusion and irritability
  • Fever and tremors
  • Heart palpitations
  • Loss of appetite

These symptoms can begin to appear within eight hours after quitting the substance and can be at its full peak by one or three days. However, the worst of these symptoms will wear off by the end of the first week.

Inpatient Or Residential Rehab Program

After the successful completion of detox, patients are advised to go for an inpatient treatment which includes:

  • Identifying the major cause of addiction
  • Developing coping techniques
  • Know about addiction cycle and its management
  • Improve confidence and knowledge for long – term recovery

The time period of this stage can be around a few weeks to months or even longer than that. The time period depends on your ability to recover faster and it will vary from patient to patient.

Outpatient Treatment

Outpatient treatment or a step down process is a phase where a patient moves from a residential treatment to an outpatient treatment. The patient isn’t required to stay in the center for the whole day anymore. They can attend their regular therapies and can return home. This phase usually lasts for about a few weeks.

Aftercare And Ongoing Support

Post all the above mentioned stages come the last stage – the aftercare support. Since addiction does not assure you of complete recovery, aftercare support becomes really helpful after the treatment. This stage does not have a definite time limit and can last forever.
