Hiding and Lying about Addiction to Loved Ones

Aug 27, 2022 | Rehab

Addiction is a chronic disease it is impossible to hide it. However, a few people still manage to do it by lying about their addiction. Anyone addicted to alcohol will often hide or lie about their drinking or the amounts of alcohol they consume. Drug addicts also lie about their consumption to save themselves from trouble.

Hiding or lying about addiction isn’t helpful. It in fact pulls you more towards physical and mental damage. If you suspect your loved one of lying about their addiction, look for the signs mentioned in the blog and convince them to seek help.

Signs of Addiction

Early stages of addiction might go unnoticed but as it progresses, the following signs can be observed:

  • Mood swings
  • Unexplained illnesses like hangovers
  • Isolating behaviour
  • Becoming secretive
  • Overlooking personal hygiene
  • Memory issues
  • Financial problems
  • Relationship issues
  • Poor concentration
  • Neglecting family responsibilities
  • Finding substances in their personal spaces
  • Missing work and deadlines
  • Lack of motivation
  • Sudden physical changes

These are just a few signs of addiction. However, if you suspect any other activities, immediately talk to them about it. They might be hiding their addiction due to various reasons like:

  • Stigma
  • Fear
  • Pride
  • Detox
  • Ambiguity

If you find your loved one hiding their addiction, try to talk to them about it. It might take a few attempts to get them to freely talk about it but it will eventually be helpful.
