Signs Of Heroin Relapse: How To Spot Them?

Apr 3, 2022 | General TRC Information

Heroin is one of the most harmful forms of drugs and definitely not something to get addicted to. However, if you or anyone from your close circle is addicted to heroin, specific heroin rehab centers are there to help you out. After the treatment the patient needs to maintain the sobriety at home. Though, the chances of relapse still exists, it is for the family to also look out for the patient as well for the signs of relapse.

Stages Of Relapse

Relapse doesn’t take place at just one moment. It has a process and usually begins when the person fails to cope with the confusing feelings and emotions. That’s when they find it difficult to handle the situation and go back to taking heroin. The process of relapse mainly has three stages.

  1. Emotional stage: this is the stage where the person finds it impossible to deal with complex emotions. They also begin to withdraw themselves from their support system and stop sharing their thoughts. If such a sign is noticed, be aware and try to avoid relapse at an early stage.
  2. Mental stage: this is the most difficult stage to fight at. The person has a conflict going on in their mind between taking the drug again and wanting to continue the recovery. If the urge to consume heroin becomes overpowering, then it is nearly impossible to resist.
  3. Physical stage: this is the final stage of relapse where the person decides to take the drug just once. This even worsens the situation as that one time increases the urge to take it again. If you find anyone at this stage, immediately take them to the rehab center to avoid fatal side effects of relapse like an overdose.

Even the family members should be careful and avoid raising situations which could trigger the feeling of relapse.

Some other signs of relapse which you can look out for are:

  • Change in attitude
  • Increased stress levels
  • Becoming secretive
  • Unable to follow the recovery routine
  • Avoiding social events
  • Losing control
