What Does a Typical Day in Rehab Look Like?

Dec 20, 2018 | Rehab

Worldwide, 31 million people have drug use disorders. Alcohol use results in 3.3 million deaths each year.

No matter the types of addiction, there is help. There are various drug treatment centers available. These centers offer a safe and supportive space for recovery.

Here is what to expect in drug rehab on a daily basis.

Mornings: Breakfast and Group Time

Generally, you can expect early mornings in drug and alcohol drug rehab centers. Breakfast could take place anytime between 6:30 and 8:30 in the morning.

You will be expected to take care of your personal hygiene and tidying of your bed and room before breakfast in most cases.

Some programs offer morning meditation, yoga or other group exercise class in the morning to help you start your day off right.

Remember, drug rehab isn’t just to rid you of chemical dependency. It is also about forming new habits that will help you cope with life, even after you’ve left rehab.

After breakfast, you will typically take part in a group therapy session. These sessions may be led by a therapist or a counselor.

Afternoon: Lunch and Various Therapy Sessions

You will break for lunch after your morning therapy session. The afternoon is often full of therapy sessions.

You may participate in one-on-one cognitive behavioral therapy sessions with a therapist. Here you will discuss your triggers and add skills to your toolbox to help you stay sober.

Some rehab centers offer specialty or alternate therapy sessions and techniques. If so, they often take place in the afternoon. For example, art and music therapy, neurofeedback and equine therapy are all options your rehab center may offer you.

You may be able to engage in family therapy. Though intimidating, family therapy is a great way to deal with hurt feelings, distrust and anger that exists in your family.

Family support is paramount in long-term sobriety. That is why most rehab centers include family therapy in their treatment plan.

There may also be a guest speaker who can provide motivation and hope. These speakers talk about their experiences after rehab and talk about ways you can rebuild trust with family members or re-start a career.

There may be a break with some free time and the option of a snack throughout the afternoon.

Evenings: Dinner, AA Meeting and Free Time

Most rehab centers allow for an hour of dinnertime to let the participants mingle over dinner.

You may have another individual session with a nurse, counselor or therapist. Each session you have throughout the day will have a different focus. You won’t be repeatedly going over the same things in your sessions.

At eight in the evening, AA meetings start. An external facilitator will come to your center to run this meeting. You are not required to attend if you don’t want to.

There are no set lights out time. You can have free time until you go to sleep.
