What to Expect in a Rehab Facility

Dec 24, 2022 | Rehab

Being in recovery is not shameful, but we understand not all individual is comfortable about revealing their recovery. While it is understandable that telling your situation is up to you, there are times and circumstances when you might feel pressured to divulge your condition.

Early recovery is a challenging situation. There are new and unfamiliar situations, especially if it is your first time functioning naturally after a long period of substance abuse. Your day-to-day life will be changed in more ways than you can imagine.

You have to learn how to function without drugs or alcohol, and you’ll learn about accomplishing personal responsibilities and fulfilling obligations in a new way. But how can you tell people that you are living a sober life?

Ways to tell People You Are in Recovery?

When you start your new life after rehab, finding a job right away that will take your mind off drugs is normal. But there will be situations when your coworkers will invite you for a drink.

At first, you do not have to tell them that you are in recovery if you are uncomfortable. You can meet them and respectfully refuse to drink, saying that you do not drink. But you have to expect that there will be another invitation to drink. If your coworkers are insisting you drink, you can tell them that you are practicing a sober lifestyle without divulging more details.

There will also be instances involving your family. It is acceptable if the only family members that know about your recovery are your immediate family. But there will be gatherings, family get-togethers, reunions, etc., which you cannot avoid.

Nevertheless, if you still refuse to tell your relatives, that’s fine. In situations where your uncles or cousins offer you drinks, you can ask your immediate family for assistance. Or you can simply say that you are changing your lifestyle for good because you want to focus on other things.

It is important to remember that it is up to you whether you want to tell people about your recovery. You do not need to tell people about your condition, especially if you are uncomfortable. All you need to do is focus on your sober living.
